Rio Grande Basin project leaders attend D.C. meeting

Dr. John Tracy, Texas Water Resources Institute (TWRI)’s director; Dr. Allen Berthold, TWRI research scientist; and Dr. Askar Karimov, research associate in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, recently attended the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative project directors’ meeting for the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) in Washington, D.C. TWRI is leading a project, “Diversifying the Water Portfolio for Agriculture in the Rio Grande Basin,” that addresses water challenges in the Rio Grande Basin.

Researchers from Texas A&M University Departments of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Soil and Crop Sciences, Ecosystem Science and Management, Agricultural Economics and New Mexico Water Resources Research Institute are investigating alternative water sources, new crops, management practices and improved water conservation to sustain agriculture.

The project is funded as part of the USDA-NIFA Agriculture and Food Research Initiative authorized by the 2014 Farm Bill, under award number 2017-68007-26318.
