Mills Scholars Program
The Texas Water Resources Institute annually administers a competitive grants program to support graduate research at Texas A&M University and Texas A&M University-Galveston. This program is funded through the W. G. Mills Memorial Endowment. Since 2001 the Texas Water Resources Institute has funded $1,000 scholarships for more than 70 students involved in water-related studies.

Funded Projects
Research funded by the Texas Water Resources Institute Mills Scholars Program covers a range of water-related topics, including:
- Determining the role of wetlands in water and wastewater treatment
- Developing improved methods to better estimate water reserves in aquifers
- Carrying out genetic and DNA studies to develop turfgrasses with greater drought tolerance
- Studying existing and proposed water resources management policies that have the potential to better protect water resources and associated habitats
- Testing whether growing turfgrass sod with composted dairy manure may or may not increase the likelihood of nutrient runoff
- Investigating if insects can serve as biological controls to reduce concentrations of aquatic weeds
- Developing educational programs about water resources and the environment, including efforts to provide hands-on learning
