USGS Graduate Research Program
The Texas Water Resources Institute administers an annual competitive request for proposals to support graduate student research at universities throughout Texas. This program is funded through the U.S. Geological Survey, with resources directed to the Texas Water Resources Institute through the National Institutes for Water Research. Since 2001 TWRI has awarded more than fifty-four $5,000-grants.

Funded Projects
The types of research funded by the Texas Water Resources Institute-US Geological Survey Competitive Grants Program cover a range of water-related topics. Examples:
- Studying the effects of brush control on water yields and rangeland ecosystems
- Addressing the quality of ground and surface water, including evaluating best management practices that lessen pollutant runoff and management policies
- Identifying ways to conserve water in urban landscapes and agricultural crops
- Improving irrigation systems and assessment of water resources economics
- Investigating how variations in freshwater inflows affect rivers and coastal ecosystems and assessing the aquatic biology of rivers, lakes, and bays including changes within these watersheds
- Evaluating water and wastewater treatment processes and related management
