Field Method for Determining Soil Texture

Bill L. Harris

Soil texture is the relative proportion of sand, silt and clay in a soil. The five textural classes are defined and photos illustrate how soil can easily be textured in the field. This leaflet also discusses clay, organic matter, amorphous material (volcanic ash or pumice), salts and rocks in soils.
