A Texas Field Guide to Evaluating Rangeland Stream & Riparian Health
Nikkoal Dictson and Larry D. White
Stream and riparian ecosystems play an important part in the water issues that face Texans today and into the foreseeable future. Healthy ecosystems provide clean water, sustain flow in rivers and act like sponges to soak up and store flood waters, recharging shallow water tables and reducing downstream flood damage. This field guide has been designed to help concerned landowners, agencies and others to evaluate visually the health of Texas’ stream and riparian ecosystems and identify any changes in that health over time. This guide discusses two monitoring and evaluation procedures: a visual assessment checklist using 10 key indicators and photo monitoring of key locations. All streams pictured are located in Texas. A glossary of terms is included.
