The Department of Soil and Crop Sciences at Texas A&M University recently awarded a Special Achievement Award for Research and Extension Collaboration to Allen Berthold, Ph.D., Texas Water Resources Institute associate director and chief of staff.

Berthold, who also serves as an assistant professor and extension specialist, has been instrumental in developing multidisciplinary teams and initiatives that are solving critical Texas water problems. He has worked at TWRI since 2009 and has served in leadership roles for water-related projects in both agricultural and urban settings.

His work has covered diverse fields, including working with local communities to develop science-backed plans to address in-stream water quality impairments, identifying potential savings by making advanced metering infrastructure data available to homeowners, leading a team of researchers focused on diversifying the water portfolio for agricultural use in the Rio Grande Basin, understanding barriers to adoption of regenerative agricultural practices, and others. This work has led to over $20 million in sponsored projects for Texas A&M University.

Berthold received a bachelor’s degree in agricultural leadership and development in 2008, a master’s degree in water management and hydrological science in 2010, a certificate in nonprofit management in 2013 and a doctorate in agricultural leadership, education and communications in 2014, all from Texas A&M University.
