The Texas Water Resources Institute (TWRI) will host a stakeholder meeting for the Thompsons Creek Watershed Partnership on June 30 in Bryan. The meeting will start at 1:30 p.m. at the Brazos Center, 3232 Briarcrest Dr.
Community members, landowners and anyone with an interest in local water quality are invited to attend and provide input on the draft Thompsons Creek Watershed Protection Plan. Leaders initiated the project in response to the identification of the creek as not meeting water quality standards. The creek does not meet standards due to elevated bacteria concentrations and low dissolved oxygen levels.
This meeting serves as the forum for public input. The forum has been driving the development of a voluntary, stakeholder-driven watershed protection plan (WPP) for the Thompsons Creek watershed. This WPP outlines strategies that will improve local water quality.
“I am excited to present an overview of the draft WPP at this meeting; it is the product of input and participation from stakeholders, including the City of Bryan, local industries, the Brazos County SWCD #450, Texas A&M Forest Service, ag producers, homeowners, and many others,” said Ward Ling, TWRI program specialist with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, Bryan-College Station.
Improving local water quality
The meeting will provide an overview of the project and the draft WPP for Thompsons Creek. The WPP is a voluntary, community-developed plan to restore and protect Thompsons Creek. It identifies potential sources of pollution and voluntary measures to restore water quality in the creek. Previous meeting materials are available at thompsonscreek.twri.tamu.edu/resources/.
Funding for developing the WPP for the Thompsons Creek watershed is provided in part by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through a Clean Water Act Section 319(h) grant to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
