A new resource is available offering guidance for restoring riparian areas after natural disasters along rivers and streams: Cleaning up after the flood: Guidelines to protecting long-term river health on a hill country landscape.

The quick reference guide was developed by Alexander Neal, a program specialist at the Texas Water Resources Institute (TWRI), who helps manage the statewide Texas Riparian and Stream Ecosystem Education program.

According to the guide, A riparian area is defined as the transition zone between the aquatic ecosystem (e.g., stream) and the terrestrial ecosystem (e.g., upland environment).

Research has shown that a well-vegetated and stable riparian area plays a significant role in maintaining the balance of sediment loss and deposition, Neal said.
