TWRI leadership visits with leadership and researchers at the University of Bari.
Did you know that Texas and Italy face many of the same water challenges?
Saltwater intrusion into groundwater resources, sustainable water use for agricultural production, and municipal water security for large urban populations — water leaders in both Italy and Texas are tackling many of the same problems.
In January, leadership from the Texas Water Resources Institute (TWRI) met with scientists and leaders at universities and organizations in Italy to build future collaborations that mutually benefit water resource management research in both regions.
“TWRI is working to build partnerships with universities both in the United States and internationally, and we are grateful to our colleagues in Italy for their warm welcome and for sharing their expertise and current research with us,” said Giovanni Piccinni, Ph.D., TWRI director.
Piccinni and Allen Berthold, Ph.D., and Lucas Gregory, Ph.D., TWRI associate directors, met with and presented research and collaboration opportunities to colleagues at the:
- Polytechnic University of Bari (Politecnico di Bari)
- University of Bari Aldo Moro (Università degli Studi di Bari)
- University of Tuscia (Università degli Studi della Tuscia)
- Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations
The university leaders and TWRI leadership team are moving forward on plans for graduate student exchange programs, research project collaborations, and specialty courses for water professionals and researchers.
“We’d like to thank Leonardo Damiani, Ph.D., head of the Department of Civil, Environmental, Land, Building and Chemical Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Bari; Simone Severini, Ph.D., head of the Department of Agriculture and Forest Sciences at the University of Tuscia; Francesco Gentile, Ph.D., University of Bari Aldo Moro; Ruhiza Jean Boroto, FAO senior land and water officer; and Rosaida Dolce, FAO water specialist,” Piccinni said.
“We were honored to be representing TWRI in Italy,” he said. “And I am thrilled to be working towards future international research collaborations in water resources management.”
