Rhodes recognized by Society for Range Management for Ogallala research

Texas Water Resources Institute (TWRI) Research Specialist TWRI Ed Rhodes received the technical publication award at the annual Texas Section Society for Range Management (TSSRM) meeting held last month in Victoria.

“The honors and recognition received by our faculty and students highlight the significant and ongoing contributions of Texas A&M AgriLife to rangeland health and resource stewardship across Texas,” said Humberto Perotto, Ph.D., TSSRM president and associate professor and Joan Negley Kelleher Endowed Professor in Ranch Management in the Texas A&M Department of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management.

“The Declining Ogallala Aquifer and the Future Role of Rangeland Science on the North American High Plains” was published in Rangeland Ecology and Management and coauthored by Rhodes; Perotto; Evan Tanner, Ph.D., assistant professor, Texas A&M University-Kingsville Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute; Jay Angerer, Ph.D., research leader, U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service, Montana; and William Fox, Ph.D., associate professor and AgriLife Extension range specialist.

“We posited that the art and science of rangeland management stands uniquely poised to tackle this challenge directly through creative integration, where appropriate, of native rangeland restoration, improved pasture management, integrated crop-livestock systems, and regenerative agricultural practices aimed at preserving soil and rangeland health,” Rhodes said. “Rangeland management can provide continuity in the ability of the Ogallala region to continue to provide food, fiber, and other ecosystem services both locally and globally.”

Several other Texas A&M AgriLife faculty and students also received awards at the annual meeting.
